Infrared (IR) filters include many types of optical filters for use in the IR spectrum. Infrared filters for transmitting, absorbing reflection and blocking the IR, are manufactured in many degrees of specifications and tolerances in a wide selection of sizes.

Types of infrared filters include the following:-

Infrared Transmitting Filters

Schott and Hoya infrared transmitting longpass and bandpass filters transmit from 695nm to 1 micron. They include red and black glasses transmitting at specific wavelengths in the infrared. Cold mirror filters also transmit in the infrared reflecting the visible radiation. More information on cold mirrors page.

Infrared Absorbing Filters

Infrared heat is absorbed by heat absorbing glass filters reducing the heat transmitted through illumination systems. Filter types include Schott KG1, KG2, KG3 and KG5 or Hoya HA30, HA50 either tempered or untempered. More information on heat absorbing filters page.

Near Infrared (NIR) Blocking Filters

Near Infrared (NIR) blocking filters are made in several types of specifications with specific types more suited to certain applications. NIR blocking filters separate the visible from the unwanted near infrared. As with hot mirrors acting as heat protection filters blocking the path beam blocking the infrared by reflecting the IR radiation for use at 0º and 45º angle of incidence. See hot mirrors page for details

Infrared Cut Off Filters (Blocking)

Infrared cut off filters cut the infrared energy keeping the natural image reality. Avoid and adjust the colour deviation for digital camera application. Very similar to the NIR blocking filter but with a cut in the infrared.
